Milestones in the history of the HerzZentrum Hirslanden

The official inauguration of the HerzZentrum Hirslanden took place on January 1st 1987. The founding partners were the cardiac surgeons Prof. Louis Egloff and Dr. Markus Studer, as well as the cardiologists Prof. Martin Rothlin, Prof. Heinz Hirzel and Dr. Roberto Tartini.

During this first year, 345 open heart operations and 540 cardiac catheterizations and/or coronary angiographies were performed. Dr. sc. tech. Istvan Babotai joined the team in the course of the summer. Since then he has been in charge of the cardiac pacemaker unit.

The 1000th cardiac operation was performed in 1989, when Dr. Robert Siebenmann joined the surgical team. In 1990, the HerzZentrum Hirslanden was recognized by the Swiss Society of Cardiology as a Postgraduate Training Center. At that time, a second operation theatre for open heart surgery at the Hirslanden Clinic became necessary and was inaugurated in 1991. The first coronary stent was implanted in early 1992, and one year later a second cath lab was acquired.

Dr. Maurus Huber (Cardiology), Dr. Manfred Ritter (Echocardiography) and Dr. Andreas Laske (Cardiac Surgery) joined the team in 1995. Within the first 10 years, more than 14700 invasive diagnostic procedures, 3857 interventional procedures and 6105 open heart surgical procedures were performed. Dr. Philipp Wagdi (Cardiology) joined the HerzZentrum Hirslanden in 1997, while Prof. Rothlin retired one year later. The expanding Cardiology team was joined by Dr. Andreas Gerber in March 2000, while the coronary care unit was inaugurated in fall.

Since 2001, the outpatient consultation for cardiac dysrhythmias has been conducted in cooperation with the Departement of Cardiology, University of Basel, enhancing the spectrum of possible invasive and interventional modalities. In the course of 2002, the 10000th open heart operation was performed. In 2002, finally, the Cardiologist Dr. Urs Knutti and the Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Martin Kunz, joined the HerzZentrum Hirslanden. By the end of the year, Dr. Markus Studer retired, ending a very successful career.

The year 2005 saw the retirement of Prof. Dr. Heinz Hirzel, his successor PD Dr. Gabor Sütsch began his activities in July of this year. Dr. Knutti, too, left the HerzZentrum, and the Cardiology team was then joined by Dr. Ernst Schuiki.
